Visitors are now able to access Esalen as well as other businesses and trails in northern Big Sur via twice-daily convoys on Highway 1 operated by Caltrans.
Convoys run only at 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day. These are the only opportunities to travel into and out of Big Sur, so visitors must plan accordingly.

The spring stars and sun-sparkled ocean waves—with glimpses of whale flumes—form a striking backdrop for exploring the renowned Esalen® Massage at its place of origin. This workshop offers an introduction to the foundational concepts and flow of the Esalen approach through a blend of experiential exercises, lecture-demonstrations, guided hands-on practice, and personal reflection.
Participants engage with key elements found in meaningful massage experiences: breath awareness, mindful centering, body mechanics, quality of touch, rapport, and integration. Long, flowing strokes and gentle stretches—hallmarks of Esalen bodywork—will be explored, alongside methods that may support the release of physical tension through an approach that emphasizes working with, rather than on, the body.
The workshop is open to a range of experience levels, from those encountering bodywork for the first time to professionals seeking fresh perspectives. Instruction includes at-the-table guidance, group discussion, and opportunities for participants to share and reflect on their own experiences.
The practice of Esalen Massage invites connection with one’s sense of wholeness and wonder. Teaching tools include music, charts, massage tables, and exercises designed to awaken the senses. The healing waters of the hot springs and the natural beauty of the Esalen grounds offer a supportive context for this immersive experience.
All levels of experience are welcome.

Join us in exploring Esalen’s historic, culture-shifting origins, the vision for human potential, and our core values, as we embark on another 60 years of transformational education. The California Condor is more than North America's largest flying bird— it is a living testament to what becomes possible when a community refuses to give up. Join Cheryl Thiele of the Ventana Wildlife Society for an exploration of the condor's extraordinary journey from the brink of extinction back to the skies of Big Sur. Through stories of conservation, collaboration, and ecological renewal, we'll consider what this remarkable species might teach us about resilience, belonging, and hope.
Artificial intelligence is rapidly changing our world. These tools offer real possibilities for productivity and creativity, while raising many other serious questions. In this class, we’ll use Esalen’s lens of human potential to explore how to meet AI with discernment and a grounded sense of human value. The session has space for curiosity, skepticism, enthusiasm, concern, and everything in between.
