Return to your natural state of balance and alignment through long strokes, a slow pace, and integrative pauses.
An Esalen® Massage session is an inward journey rather than a purely therapeutic treatment. Transformation occurs through the practice of embodied presence and integration of body, mind, and spirit.
Sessions are 75 minutes long and take place in semi-private rooms at the baths or outside on the massage deck (weather permitting).
We recommend arriving to the baths at least 10 minutes prior to your massage reservation time to shower and soak, keeping in mind it may take 5–10 minutes to walk down the hill from your guest room or parking spot.
Please note: the baths are clothing optional and gender-inclusive, including changing areas and restrooms.
Leave valuables locked safely in your room or your car, as there are no lockers in the changing areas.
We recommend removing silver jewelry before soaking, as the minerals in the water will cause it to tarnish.
Following your session, please feel free to enjoy a post-massage soak after showering off the massage oil.
Developed at Esalen Institute in the 1960’s, this whole-body massage invites you into a meditative state through long, flowing strokes, a slow pace, and intentional pauses. Esalen® Massage sessions encourage the body to soften, unwind, and return to balance. As awareness deepens, more specific or detailed work may be offered to support areas calling for attention.
Our massages are 75 minutes long and take place in semi-private rooms at the Baths. Weather permitting, massages may also take place outside on the upper deck.

During our session we will ride the presence of touch. Side by side, through mutual embodiment, we explore the intuitive language of no words. Using breath to interact with deep states of meditative relaxation, allowing the body to self organize, restore, and find its natural state of rest. In hopes of leaving you in a great sense of peace and tranquility.
My sessions are deeply nourishing allowing the mind, body and soul to completely relax. I incorporate a diverse range of modalities including Esalen® Massage, gentle stretching, reflexology, craniosacral and deep tissue. My body work is detailed yet fluid, dancing with the rhythm of breath and subtle awareness. Each session in a journey from within to help you discover and heal energetic and physical blockages. My passion is to assist in your healing process, offering a safe space to fully drop into your heart and go deep into the inner work.
Relax into my healing hands for a journey moving inward. Through rhythmic movement and releasing the deeper layers of fascia, I can lead you into a profound state of relaxation. In the year 2000, I began my training as a Holistic Health Practitioner in San Diego (IPSB college), specializing in Sensory Repatterning, Structural Integration, Shiatsu, and Trager work. As I continue to develop my practice, I feel honored to be in your presence.
We literally have lost touch with our bodies. Our bodies reveal what the soul yearns for. A secret of the body is that it does not need to be forced. With enough presence and space, the body, just like nature, will find a way to reconnect with itself. We just have to slow down enough to listen. Esalen® Massage is a presence-based contemplative bodywork that meets the practitioner and client where they both are. Being with what is, is the soil in which both partners receive and find nourishment. Esalen® Massage is not about fixing, forcing or “deep” pressure, but about cultivating a deep sense of peace and restfulness as we reconnect ourselves to the wholeness and the wisdom of our bodies. Aside from the Esalen framework, my influences include: Iyengar adaptive yoga, traditional Thai bodywork, trigger point release therapy, and trauma-informed NARM bodywork. I feel the hum in people. From that sense, I can support the client where they are in a profoundly intimate attunement that allows the client to go into a deep contemplative place, very similar to the effects of meditation.
About me: I am an assigned female at birth (AFAB), queer, trans, person of color (QTPOC) dedicated to creating more awareness, visibility, and accessibility for integrated wellness therapies to the LGBTQ+, BIPOC, disabled, and neurodivergent communities that have historically been marginalized, oppressed and silenced. Within my own scope as a bodyworker and a teacher, I hope to help facilitate LGBTQ2+ back home to their fullest, authentic selves.
I have been an Esalen massage practitioner since 2007, and this work is both an honor and one of my greatest loves. The practice of massage is an honor and one of my greatest loves. My work is a dance of slow long strokes, both gentle and strong, working with the rhythm of your body to allow deep relaxation. I will help create a safe and sacred space for your body to unwind and to receive the beautiful gift of touch.

I am a student of the waves, an avid surfer. The flow of my bodywork matches the mesmerizing waves and flow of the ocean, contributing to the deeply relaxing, restful, and calming effects of your session with me. With over 25 years as a professional musician, I understand there is infinite precision to the art of listening. After practicing massage for the last decade, I bring this discipline to my bodywork sessions, balancing not only the tissues but the nervous system as well through rhythm, creativity and flow. Attentive presence, nurturing touch, deep musculature sculpting and integrative long strokes await you with my listening hands.
A massage practitioner and teacher of Esalen® Massage for over 25 years, my massage incorporates a skillful blend of various types of bodywork, including elements of Trigger Point Therapy, Deep Tissue Massage, Acupressure, Craniosacral work, Reconnective Healing, and Esalen® Massage. I can do deep massage, lighter energetic work, or somewhere in between. I enjoy working with chronic neck and low back problems, as well as working with those who want to relax, de-stress, and recharge.
For over five decades, I have practiced Esalen Massage as a living art — a moving meditation — rooted in embodied presence and an open heart. I trust in the body’s innate wisdom and its natural movement toward wholeness when given the gift of deep relaxation.
Each session unfolds in attentive stillness, where connection becomes the ground for healing. My work weaves together a range of techniques and pressures, guided by intuition and the unique needs of each person.
Having also served as a midwife for 15 years, I hold a special reverence for pregnancy and the sacred threshold of birth. I cherish working with pregnant women and couples during this profound and tender time.

Tim has been a professional massage therapist since 1987 and a Registered Nurse since 1992. He draws from a diverse background of healing bodywork modalities: Esalen, table Thai Yoga massage, Ohashi Shiatsu, and Deep Bodywork. My hybrid fusion gently lengthens and twists the body gradually to release muscle tension. My massage mantra follows slow is deep. And deep is slow. Clients report a profound parasympathetic state and their monkey mind’s voice is a whisper after my massage sessions.
Using pressure points and the integrative Esalen style of massage, I work deeply into areas of tension, lengthening and opening. I balance this work with gentle nurturing strokes to promote relaxation, while including stretches and joint manipulation to promote greater mobility.
Listening takes many forms that we are able to sink into through touch. Within a session we both will have the ability to drop into a deep and connected space, while holding a compassionate sense of being. We can reach this parasympathetic state with flowing strokes, spacious pauses, lengthening stretches, while combining varying levels of depth and detail work. Our physical bodies contain memory, storing emotion within the muscle. Every experience is individualized and intuitive in order to meet the recipient where they reside, physically and emotionally. We want to meet these emotions with grace and gratitude as they reach the surface. Esalen is sacred land that we aim to honor, and this extends to honoring our bodies. As much as we are facilitators, we are equally students. We will return feeling closer to ourselves, our bodies, and hopefully feeling closer to the interconnections of life.
My practice addresses both physical and energetic issues. By slowly moving into deeper layers of tissue, I gently usher the body towards peace, balance, and relaxation, creating the ideal environment for the body to transform and heal. I am dedicated to connecting deeply with each client. Each session combines my extensive training in Deep Bodywork, Esalen® Massage and CranioSacral Therapy into a dance between long integrating strokes and slow deep tissue work, while maintaining a full hearted presence-based touch, releasing everyday stresses, addressing chronic pain, calming the mind, and leaving the body feeling unified, integrated, and deeply relaxed.

For relaxation, nervous system regulation, and embodied awareness
Using light, non-invasive touch, craniosacral therapy supports the subtle craniosacral system — the rhythmic flow of cerebrospinal fluid that influences the nervous system and overall wellbeing. Your practitioner works with you to release physical, emotional, and energetic tension and restore balance. Sessions are quiet, spacious, and deeply restorative.
Sessions are performed fully clothed. Soft, non-constrictive clothing is recommended.

In the course of the last 25 years working with adults, then children with developmental and physical delays, I was looking for a way to help people. I found massage in the form of a 650 hour program that focused on alternative healing methods and prepared students to become certified in therapeutic massage and bodywork. Through that program I found that touch has grown into the meaningful contact of life, and whole body connection. There I developed a sense of touch that was purposeful but not demanding, brought change without being attached to the outcome and offered connection without the need for cognition or words. When I began this journey I experienced CranioSacral Therapy for the first time, quickly I knew I desired to participate in this physical as well as energetic work. It challenged my understanding of the world and the body, I questioned what was happening during these sessions, was the practitioner moving or was I, why did I feel so emotional and how can a body part unwind like that. After deepening my ability to connect to the body though the practice of whole body integrative style of Esalen Massage…. I finally moved back toward the first modality to touch my heart, CranioSacral Therapy.
Cindy Nelson finds great purpose in using the healing process employed by gentle, light, non-invasive touch in order to release tension and improve the function of the CranioSacral system. As a pediatric nurse practitioner for 38 years, Cindy experienced firsthand the value and reward of touch primarily through her work with adolescent pulmonary disease. Initially skeptical of alternative modalities, she discovered CranioSacral Therapy (CST) after the practice helped her son ultimately recover from an illness for which allopathic medicine had presented no solution. Studying John Upledger’s unique technique while also maintaining a collaboration with the Integrative Medicine Department of her local hospital, she has created an alternative and innovative healing pathway to greater health.
Alongside our breath and heartbeat flows a more subtle current: the craniosacral rhythm. Carried by cerebrospinal fluid, it nurtures our nervous system. When its flow is impacted by the stress of life’s demands, we may feel foggy, anxious, or disconnected. Through gentle touch, presence, and deep listening, your practitioner works with you to soften, unwind, and reorient toward balance. Whether you're seeking rest, reflection, or subtle transformation, this session offers a return to your natural rhythm guided by the body’s innate wisdom.
Sessions are performed fully clothed. Soft, non-constrictive clothing is recommended.

Esalen Massage applies principles of mindfulness to bodywork, offering up a holistic body-mind-spirit experience on the massage table. Through oil application with light-to-medium pressure and slow, rhythmic strokes, the practitioner evokes awareness, a sensory “coming home.” The practitioner follows rather than leads, and adds deeper detail work to untangle stressed muscles, integrating each release into the surrounding tissue and the whole body. Assisted movement or stretches can be applied to free up old holding patterns, and frequent pauses give time for assimilation, energetic re-balance, and a sense of well-being.
Practitioners use a variety of oils throughout sessions. Please notify massage@esalen.org if you have any allergies to oils, and inform your practitioner before your session begins.
Prices for all services include an 18% gratuity. If desired, guests may add additional gratuity for any service at the time of booking or after the session.
We do not offer a couples massage service. You may book your massage sessions at the same time (depending on availability) and make a note in your appointment requesting to be in the same room if possible. We are not able to guarantee a private room but will do our best to accommodate your request.
While Esalen Massage can incorporate deeper work, it approaches bodywork differently than traditional deep tissue. Many clients experience significant depth and release in a softer, more intuitive way. Your practitioner will meet your body exactly where it is in the moment — though some of our practitioners do not offer deeper work. Please read the practitioner bios above.
Other than service animals, pets are not allowed on the property. If you have booked a massage or other treatment and plan to bring a service animal with you, please reach out to massage@esalen.org before your arrival to let us know so we can ensure your comfort during your appointment. You will also be required to complete a service animal agreement upon arriving at Esalen.
In accordance with the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA), service animals are defined as dogs that are individually trained to do work or perform tasks for people with disabilities, like guiding people who are blind, alerting people who are deaf, pulling a wheelchair, alerting and protecting a person who is having a seizure, reminding a person with mental illness to take prescribed medications, calming a person with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) during an anxiety attack, or performing other duties. Service animals are working animals, not pets. The work or task a dog has been trained to provide must be directly related to the person’s disability. Dogs whose sole function is to provide comfort or emotional support do not qualify as service animals under the ADA.

Esalen Massage, developed in the 1960s by Molly Day Shackman and later refined by Vicki Topp, Brita Ostrom, Deborah Medow, and Peggy Horan, is an evolving practice that integrates sensory awareness, healing arts, and meditative body–mind disciplines.
