Visitors are now able to access Esalen as well as other businesses and trails in northern Big Sur via twice-daily convoys on Highway 1 operated by Caltrans.
Convoys run only at 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day. These are the only opportunities to travel into and out of Big Sur, so visitors must plan accordingly.

Mac Murphy brings the principles of Qi Gong into Esalen® Massage—grounding, fluidity, breath, effortless movement, and the cultivation of presence—inviting participants to discover how the quality of their own embodiment shapes the quality of their touch. A fourth-generation steward of Esalen Institute in Big Sur, Mac grew up immersed in Esalen’s living exploration of human potential, our relationship with the natural world, and the innate wisdom of the body: he weaves together the flowing language of touch with elemental awareness. Qi Gong is at the heart of his practice, informed also by his immersive study of Tai Chi, Kung Fu, and Taoist philosophy in China’s Wudang Mountains.
