Visitors are now able to access Esalen as well as other businesses and trails in northern Big Sur via twice-daily convoys on Highway 1 operated by Caltrans.
Convoys run only at 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day. These are the only opportunities to travel into and out of Big Sur, so visitors must plan accordingly.

Ash Ryzen Witham (they/she) is a queer, nonbinary, trauma-informed somatic coach and embodiment facilitator, dedicated to creating inclusive experiences for personal and collective transformation, guiding people into deeper connection with themselves, each other, and life itself. Based in Los Angeles, they facilitate workshops, courses, retreats, and coach across the U.S. and internationally.
Ash’s work is rooted in over a decade of study, practice, and facilitation. They are a course leader with Authentic Relating Training International and trained through the Strozzi Institute’s rigorous somatic coaching program, with advanced study in trauma and resilience. Their approach is shaped by a deep commitment to embodied learning, relational intelligence, and lived, human experience.
Ash is faculty at the Esalen Institute, and has also contributed to its Center for Theory and Research through the Subtle Body initiative, an invite-only symposium exploring the edges of human potential.
At the heart of their work is alchemy: using ache, tension, and longing as raw material for our greatest opportunities and gifts. Through somatic wisdom, authentic relating, breath, movement, and voice, Ash guides people into deeper contact with their truth. Their spaces are grounded, dynamic, and alive, supporting lasting, embodied change that continues well beyond the experience.
