As part of Esalen’s Self-Guided Explorations this week, participants can engage with Ramzi Fawaz’s offering, Think Like a Multiverse: Pathways to Wonder, Kinship, and Radical Openness— a vibrant, mind-expanding invitation to imagine identity, community, and transformation through the lens of multiplicity. Drawing from speculative fiction, queer theory, and the political imagination of comic books and fantasy literature, Fawaz leads participants into the shimmering possibility of a world where contradiction is generative, and difference is a source of connection. His sessions are equal parts lecture, dialogue, and creative inquiry.

Throughout the week, guests can deepen this intellectual exploration through daily embodiment and movement classes — all included in the Self-Guided Explorations experience — allowing for a full-bodied integration of the themes explored in Ramzi's sessions.

Relational Mindfulness: A Path to Personal and Collective Awakening
July 7–11, 2025

July 7–11, 2025

Relational mindfulness offers 9 principles and practices for meeting the beautiful, dynamic, and messy field of human relating as our laboratory for awakening. It offers a path for cultivating greater peace, understanding, joy, resilience, and freedom within ourselves and our world.

Sitting alone on a meditation cushion is a wholly different exercise than engaging socially, at work, in conflict, politics, or romance. Or is it? Relational mindfulness acts as a bridge, bringing the spaciousness of awareness off the cushion into every aspect of our lives.

The principles are:

  • Intention
  • The Sacred Pause
  • Deep Embodied Listening
  • Mindful Inquiry and Clear Seeing
  • Transparency and Speaking from the Heart
  • Turning Towards, Rather than Away
  • Not Taking Personally
  • Taking Responsibility
  • Compassionate Action

Intimacy begins with our willingness to see ourselves and one another clearly from the heart — beyond the myth of separation. We have to remember how to “be with” the pretty and less-pretty aspects of our experience without needing to fix, solve, or change anything in order to welcome the full spectrum of our humanity into wholeness. On this restorative retreat, we’ll explore together:

  • Practices for finding greater freedom and authenticity in how we relate.
  • Ways to strengthen our capacity for meeting adversity, conflicts, and trauma with compassion, equanimity, and conscious response.
  • Ways to resource ourselves and one another to navigate the times we are facing with resilience.
  • Support for engaging in our lives with love, wholeness, and fierce compassion rather than fear, scarcity, or the myth of separation.

Join us for a transformative exploration of the personal, interpersonal, transpersonal, ecological, societal, and mystical impacts of relational mindfulness. This workshop will include embodied meditation, experiential practices, conscious movement, reflective writing, and deep time in nature. All are welcome.

Role Mate to Soul Mate: The Art and Discipline of Love
July 11–14, 2025
July 11–14, 2025
July 11, 2025
July 11–14, 2025

Since falling in love is biologically natural, but sustaining love is biologically unnatural, Soul Mate focuses on the art and discipline of sustaining love. You begin with learning how to appreciate your partner so specifically and frequently that your partner feels fully seen and loved.

You then practice both the art and discipline of hearing your partner’s criticisms without becoming defensive. For example, so you don’t have to fear “walking on eggshells” before sharing a concern, your partner first learns how to prepare her or himself to emotionally associate your criticism with an opportunity to be more deeply loved.

Soul Mate is designed as the next evolutionary shift beyond active listening. Active listening allowed the criticizer to feel heard, but failed to teach the person hearing the criticism how to emotionally associate the criticism with an opportunity to be more deeply loved. The problem? Unless the receiver of criticism feels safe the person sharing their concern cannot feel safe.

You will learn a series of practices you may integrate into your everyday life:

  • Six methods of sustaining a “conflict free zone” for 166 hours of your 168-hour week.
  • A “Caring and Sharing Time” the remaining two hours by practicing six mindsets that allow you to not feel defensive when criticized.
  • “Eleven Wisdoms” as a foundation for deepening your love.
  • The four “depleters of love,” aka the “Four C’s” (Criticisms, Complaints, Controlling, and Complacency)
  • How to use your new skills with your children, parents, work colleagues and people you differ with politically.
  • How to use music and dancing to revitalize your love (to be practiced by dancing before each session)

To sustain your practice after the workshop, I invite you to free, ongoing, group follow-up calls to resolve stumbling blocks. If you wish to review the insights and exercises at any time, you will also have the option of purchasing a Zoom and book version of the course. This workshop is for couples of all genders and sexual orientations.  Developed over the past 30 years, the workshop is also used by many health professionals in their work with clients and patients.

July 18–20, 2025

Step into a sanctuary of renewal and self-inquiry, a space where caregivers can resource and reconnect with the heart of their service. This is an opportunity to slow down, breathe, and nurture yourself through transformative practices that will replenish your soul and deepen your work with children. Open to a more embodied and authentic way of engaging with children, growing from a place of presence, curiosity, and wonder.

Together, we will embark on a journey of healing and draw from a source of collective wisdom as we explore:

  • Heart-centered caretaking philosophies.
  • Emotional literacy and modeling authenticity for children.
  • Self-inquiry on how our childhood healing impacts our work with children.
  • Reflection and introspection through journaling and time in nature.
  • Deep listening and sharing circles.
  • Contemplative, movement, and embodiment practices.

On this beautiful and sacred land, we will co-create a safe space to renew. Immersed in the beauty of nature, we will rediscover the childlike joy of curiosity and play, allowing the land to teach us about reciprocity and resilience. In a community of fellow caregivers, we will share stories, engage in experiential practices, and cultivate a deeper sense of connection — to ourselves and our inner world, to the experience of the children we care for, and to the precious earth that sustains us.

We will attune to our inner landscapes, listening for what is calling to be restored. Through the lens of “unlearning,” we will reflect on the beliefs and patterns that shape our caregiving, making space for new ways of being and relating. Inspired by the philosophy of the Gazebo Park School at Esalen, we’ll explore perspectives on caregiving and childhood that invite a more spacious and heart-centered approach.

By honoring the sacred work of caretaking, we will create a field of presence as our process illuminates how healing can profoundly enrich our relationships with children. This is an invitation to nourish yourself — to step into a space of experiential learning and reclaim your inner wonder and wisdom.

This workshop is best suited for guardians, educators and caretakers tending to children.

July 28 – August 1, 2025

Imagine your relationship expressing the true depths of your love and commitment. If you are in love, this retreat is an opportunity to rise even higher in love. If you are in crisis, it is an opportunity for healing on the deepest level. We all carry some degree of negative programming from our past, and there are loving and effective ways to transform this programming into a positive and vibrant celebration of our connection.

During this 5 day workshop, we will naturally dive into a deeper learning experience with much more material than we can cover in a weekend. The extra time allows for a fuller integration of all the practices. Each couple will experience exercises and practices to do with each other, therapeutic coaching by the Vissells, the support of other couples, and time for sharing after each practice.

We will share a collection of tools for deeper appreciation and communication building, including healthy communication of feelings, our partner as a mirror, understanding and respecting each other’s differences, conflict resolution, healing past hurts, sexual wellness, inner child/inner parent, taking responsibility and developing a true inner connection. Take the opportunity to explore these tools with your partner during the workshop and learn to incorporate them into everyday life as you continue to improve your relationship at home. For more information, visit www.SharedHeart.org.

This workshop welcomes couples of all gender and sexual orientations.

August 15–17, 2025

In today’s unpredictable world, mastering negotiation is essential for effective leadership.

This highly interactive workshop will immerse you in real-world negotiation scenarios that mirror the complexity of today’s challenges. Using the Systemic Multi-Constituency Exercise (SMCE) method, you’ll engage in dynamic role-play simulations where competing interests, shifting alliances, and high stakes force you to think strategically, adapt quickly, and build trust in uncertain environments.

One such immersive simulation exercise, “The Coastal Crossroads,” places you in a pristine coastal region at the center of a heated development dispute. As members of a diverse coalition — including local government, Indigenous land stewards, environmental activists, fishermen, and luxury resort developers — you must negotiate land use policies, economic opportunities, and environmental protections while balancing sustainability, cultural heritage, and economic growth in the face of competing interests and escalating tensions.

Throughout the workshop, expert facilitation, peer feedback, and structured debriefs will help you refine your approach to coalition-building, resilience, and conflict navigation. You’ll explore negotiation strategies that extend beyond the bargaining table — leveraging human connection, systemic thinking, and creative problem-solving to lead with confidence in high-stakes situations. You will emerge with actionable strategies to manage complex challenges in leadership and everyday life.

Join us for an immersive experience that will transform how you think about negotiation, equipping you with practical tools to navigate chaos, crisis, and complexity with clarity and strength.

**Special Notes on Attendance:

Full Workshop Participation Strongly Encouraged.

This workshop is designed as a deeply immersive experience in which each session builds upon the last, culminating in a collective debrief and reflection on Sunday. To honor the integrity of the process and the group experience, we ask that all participants commit to full participation from Friday through Sunday.

Past workshops have shown that when participants come and go, it disrupts the flow of engagement and can diminish the experience for both the individual and the group. The immersive nature of this training relies on trust, presence, and continuity, and stepping away from key moments may limit the depth of your own learning as well as the collective insights of the group.

We invite you to fully step into this journey, embracing the challenges, breakthroughs, and transformations that emerge when you stay fully engaged from beginning to end. If you have any concerns about participation, please reach out to ntf@negotiationtaskforce.org in advance so we can support you in making the most of this experience.

To facilitate the assignment and creation of personalized roles for each participant in this immersive experience, workshop registration will close on August 8th, 2025.

This workshop includes an additional $50 for materials.

Love Yourself For Everyone Else’s Sake

Mark Abramson designed the course as a deep dive into self-compassion after seeing students achieve self-kindness from work with his Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Clinic at Stanford University. Thirty years of teaching have taught Dr. Abramson that bringing kindness and compassion to one’s self is truly the most altruistic of all practices.

Imagine always being able to count on your own mind being kind to you — no matter what challenges life presents. That is your birthright, and now is the time to claim it! Immerse yourself in this mindfulness-based approach to self-love and compassion.

Mindfulness, meditation, and contemplative practices have entered all spheres of our society, including corporate settings, sports,  performance, medicine, and psychology. Science has confirmed that ancient mental and physical training systems, such as meditation practices, confer health benefits for immunity, brain architecture, and pain management, as well as mental and physical resilience.

During our time together, you are invited to:

  • Learn mindfulness meditation practices.
  • Connect and experience your own loving attention.
  • Learn to take back control of your body/mind to create a more peaceful you.

Throughout the weekend, you will have the opportunity to unite your body, mind, and soul into a self-nourishing whole person while strengthening your ability to give love to others by first loving yourself.

Do you struggle with shyness or social anxiety? Do you feel intimidated or scared to meet new people or worry others will judge you? If so, come face your fears and discover tools to connect to people authentically!

In this workshop, you will learn how to enjoy meeting new people and interact more successfully with others. Instead of feeling drained after social interactions, you can come away feeling invigorated and refreshed. You can learn ways to become skillfully vulnerable, authentic, and playful with others.

Instead of feeling self-conscious or like you need to “perform,” find out how to relax when meeting new people and be fully present in your interactions. Emerge with more lightheartedness, authenticity, and joy. There will also be a focus on flirtation skills for those looking to meet a new special someone, enhance the romance with their current partner, or just have more fun in life!

Together, we’ll explore:

  • Interpersonal exercises to increase connection.
  • Rejection training to desensitize our fears of rejection.
  • Flirtation training to learn how to be more flirtatious and playful.
  • Movement and exercises to specifically attack shame and reduce self-consciousness.

If you tend to avoid social opportunities or find interactions with other people draining, this is the workshop for you! Much of life is about the quality of our relationships with others. Discover how to liberate yourself from self-consciousness and disconnection and build stronger relationships.

Have you created the impact you want? Are you showing up the way you’d like? Are you going in the right direction? You have never before been where you are right now. You have never been the age you are today, never had the experiences you now possess. This is your time to pause and reflect. We rarely allow ourselves the opportunity to stop and look at what is changing — or discover what we truly need to feel fulfilled.

This very interactive workshop will include lots of experiential exercises. Though we will cover valuable theory and there will be plenty of reflection time, this will not be a series of talks/lectures. There will be movement, coaching, a little dance, and lots of opportunity to share insights. Active participation is strongly encouraged; however, participation will always be voluntary.

Our goal is to step back from our lives and renew. We will create a courageous community to challenge, nurture and express ourselves. Participants will have the opportunity to learn what brings them joy and purpose, and then cultivate a vision to serve as a foundation for both the next year and next phase of life.

We will engage in a progression of individual and group exercises focused on reflection, movement, and listening to our inner wisdom. We’ll discover how to navigate major life transitions and learn skills to access our intuition. We will uncover the behaviors that support our overall success, and reveal which ones undermine our goals and fulfillment. If you are passionate about having a more powerful and authentic impact on the world around you, this program of renewal will be especially valuable.

“Wilderness, by itself, has its own way of teaching. The direct experience of wilderness can spontaneously bring wholeness back into the human community.”  – Manual of Gestalt Practice in the Tradition of Dick Price

When we are present in the here and now, every moment in the natural world represents an opportunity to enrich, heal, and clarify our relationships to the Earth, ourselves, and one another. Esalen’s co-founder Dick Price spent much of his time hiking in the Big Sur wilderness, and he believed that wild nature supported wholeness and healing for himself and others. With roots in the Gestalt tradition and values Dick developed at Esalen, Relational Gestalt Practice is designed to help us live our lives with increased awareness and embodied presence — and can be powerfully explored within the natural world.

For five days, we will immerse in awareness practices and deep nature connection on the sacred grounds of the Esalen Institute and in the Big Sur wild (ancestral lands of the Esselen People). Together, we will explore our inner and outer landscapes by mindfully engaging with biodiverse wilderness and Gestalt practices under the open sky. Dorothy Charles, co-founder of Tribal Ground Circle and founder of Relational Gestalt Practice, will support the cultivation of presence, awareness, and the authentic expression of our hearts and minds. Wildtender co-founders Noël Vietor and Fletcher Tucker will guide our reconnection with the living world through a framework of kinship. A community of wild relations — redwood groves, ravens, mossy boulders, and all the beings and aspects of Big Sur — will expand our circle to include the more-than-human world.

  • Answers to frequently asked questions about the workshop can be found here.
  • Various hiking abilities can be accommodated, bearing in mind that day hikes for this workshop will be up to four miles long with rugged, uneven, and sometimes steep terrain. Participants must be able to sit on the ground for periods of time. If you have any questions about your ability to participate, please read the workshop FAQs or email info@wildtender.com.

This workshop includes an additional $60 of faculty tuition and $40 park fee.

The Body of Belonging invites you to explore feelings of kinship, acceptance, and community on a somatic level, identifying the elements most significant to you. Through gentle yoga-inspired movement, breathwork, sound, and meditation, we will engage in self-inquiry practices within a group setting. Together, we will create a safe and brave space to experiment with accessing a sense of belonging. Drawing from ancient and Indigenous wisdom, we will work toward dismantling the individualistic ways of being that contribute to our growing sense of separateness.

Loneliness is an epidemic eroding the fabric of who we are as a collective. It is so prevalent in the United States that the surgeon general has issued an advisory to call attention to the importance of social connection for individual and community-wide health. The hyperindividualism that has been promoted as our best way of “succeeding” has left us feeling lost and alienated. In our overfocus on self, we’ve lost sight of how connection, community, and a felt sense of belonging are central to our well-being.

Participants will be invited to connect with their individual needs as it relates to belonging. They will build skillfulness in advocating for belonging by centering and nourishing connection and community to realize the resilience that comes with healthy interdependence.

Relational Gestalt Practice: Presence, Contact and Communication
November 3–7, 2025
November 3–7, 2025
November 3, 2025
November 3–7, 2025

In 1938, researchers at Harvard University began a 75-year study that addressed life’s fundamental question: What makes a good life? The Grant Study, also known as the Harvard Study of Adult Development, found strong relationships to be the clearest predictor of life satisfaction.

In Relational Gestalt practice, direct and response-able communication is essential for creating intimacy and strengthening our bonds to others. The benefits that flow from solid relationships with partners, relatives, and friends, can be a source of connection and great joy in our lives.

Sometimes, the ways we’ve learned to communicate in relationship creates more distance rather than contact with the people who are important to us.

In this workshop, you’ll have an opportunity to become aware of the ways you communicate; you’ll have the chance to learn, unlearn, and practice ways of communicating to enhance your connection to others. Together, we will explore how the past may be keeping you from making use of the contact that is available in the here and now.

Over the course of the weekend, we will use dyads, repeating questions and open seat sessions designed to facilitate communication and understanding.

Letting go of entrenched ideas — who we are, how the world works, our place in it — is a challenge. It takes energy. Time. Space. Security. This growth encourages us to examine ourselves and understand our connection to the whole. This more flexible, less structured model of change encompasses both personal and communal, aligning with the core of our mission. Self-Guided Explorations are designed to function outside of the group structures of our workshops for a more freeform, spacious healing journey. These experiences are for those who want to immerse themselves in the peace, space, and natural majestic beauty of our campus, exploring the edges of personal growth and open group classes when compelled. The beauty of our Big Sur campus supports serenity for the mind, the body, the spirit, and offers nourishment for all three. Exploring human potential. Our dynamic open class schedule changes weekly, but always features opportunities to sit in meditation and mindfulness, explore embodiment and movement practices, and connect with nature. An opening circle, hosted by an Esalen Staff member or a visiting teacher, welcomes you as you begin your stay. A closing circle on the final day provides a reflective conclusion to your time with us. Feeding mind and body.Savor three hearty, healthy meals per day. Our kitchen draws on global culinary traditions, using the fruits of the Esalen Farm & Garden and other local Big Sur providers to create delicious meals that support holistic health — for you and for the earth.Creating space for reflection.Esalen’s beloved mineral hot springs perch dramatically over the Pacific Ocean, a juxtaposition of intimate and infinite. A core part of Esalen from its inception, the baths and tubs are an ideal place to reflect, find clarity, and set new intentions.
