Featured Special Guest July 22–26

Secular Sabbath

Secular Sabbath is an ambient music centered experience that brings people together in community through the sensory self. Based on our founder's upbringing at Esalen Institute, Secular Sabbath incorporates sensory experiences such as bodywork, breathwork, tea ceremony, and more to bring our whole body/mind/spirit online.

At the heart of Secular Sabbath are the healing properties of ambient music. Music is proven to have deep psychological and subliminal effects on human beings. At Secular Sabbath, we believe that ambient music can help to relax you into your sensory body: the way you hear, smell, taste, touch, and see. Ambient music can inspire you into a state of organic and passive meditation. Thus, ambient music improvised by musical artists in our community is the nexus of our event experience. We incorporate artists who have worldwide success with artists who should have worldwide success and invite them to play ambient music which can vary from instrumental to vocal to modular sets.

Taking inspiration from our wildly popular Summer Groove programming, that featured Sanga of the Valley, Go Within will feature Esalen’s own signature faculty in collaboration with piano, zither, and mbira musician, Laraaji in December Snow Raven (Suor) who will all provide unique experiences that complement the season.

Laraaji | Guest Musician

Laraaji is a visionary musician, composer, and mystic. Having emerged as a pioneering figure in ambient and new age music after a chance encounter with producer Brian Eno in the 70s, his music transcends conventional boundaries, seamlessly merging ambient textures with cosmic vibrations, creating an immersive and deeply introspective sonic journey.

Music

Expect an array of musical genres, from soul-stirring live performances to pulsating electronic beats, ensuring that every festival-goer finds their own unique rhythm. The stages, strategically placed to capture the magic of the surroundings, become portals to otherworldly dimensions, where the music becomes a conduit for self-discovery and communal celebration.

Creativity

Interactive art installations, workshops, and collaborative projects dot the festival grounds and add to the musical tapestry. Engage your senses in a kaleidoscope of colors, textures, and mediums as you wander through the artistic wonderland that awaits. Whether you're a seasoned artist or someone looking to unlock their creative potential, the festival provides a space where inspiration flows freely, and the boundaries between artist and observer blur.

Movement

Explore the physicality through yoga, dance, and somatic practices. Guided by experienced facilitators, these movement sessions serve as a gateway to self-discovery, allowing festival-goers to tap into the innate wisdom of their bodies. Whether you find yourself in a sunrise yoga session overlooking the Pacific or engaging in a spontaneous dance under the starlit sky, movement at Summer Groove is a celebration of the body's capacity for expression and joy.

Get playfull and joyfull.

During Esalen's signature summer series, our own faculty will be joined by very special guests to add amazing and delightful programming to each week and weekend.

Feed mind and body.

Savor three hearty, healthy meals per day. Our kitchen draws on global culinary traditions, using the fruits of the Esalen Farm & Garden and other local Big Sur providers to create delicious meals that support holistic health — for you and for the earth.

Create space for reflection.

Esalen’s beloved mineral hot springs perch dramatically over the Pacific Ocean, a juxtaposition of intimate and infinite. A core part of Esalen from its inception, the baths and tubs are an ideal place to reflect, find clarity, and set new intentions.

A man dances facing the Pacific Ocean on the pool deck at Esalen.

Imagine if you pressed pause
on your life for four weeks to
give yourself time and space
to transform.
