Due to road closures along Highway 1 to our north and south, Esalen is closed through April 11.
Esalen Institute is open! However, Highway 1 to the south is closed — please review the current travel advisory.

Esalen opens May 3, 2024

Visitors are now able to access Esalen as well as other businesses and trails in northern Big Sur via twice-daily convoys on Highway 1 operated by Caltrans.

Convoys run only at 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day. These are the only opportunities to travel into and out of Big Sur, so visitors must plan accordingly.

Johnsmith

John Smith is an ordinary name, but in the case of Johnsmith, the ordinary part ends there.  He is an extraordinary songwriter who has the vocal talent to deliver the goods while painting life stories that feel like the listener’s own. Whenever you hear about the music of Johnsmith, certain watchwords come up regardless of the source: uplifting, integrity, heart, and soul.

Born in rural eastern Iowa, into a large Irish Catholic family of ten kids, a life of music has led him far from his small-town roots and back again. After a short college stint in California, a couple of years on an organic farm in Iowa, and a few more years in Colorado, he has made his home along the upper Mississippi in western Wisconsin.

Decades of performances at concert halls, festivals, and house concerts have given birth to a half dozen acclaimed CDs.  In the process, Johnsmith has built a solid fan base in the US and abroad.

Wisconsin songwriter Johnsmith has won several awards, including the Kerrville, TX, New Folk and Great Lakes Songwriting Contests. He teaches songwriting at festivals, song camps, and Big Sur, CA’s Esalen Institute. He’s been featured on the elite NPR program New Dimensions.
