Esalen Reopens May 3

Visitors are currently able to access Esalen as well as other businesses, parks, and trails in northern Big Sur via twice-daily convoys on Highway 1 operated by Caltrans.

Convoys run only at 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day. These are the only opportunities to travel into and out of Big Sur, so visitors must plan accordingly.

Due to road closures along Highway 1 to our north and south, Esalen is closed through April 11.
Esalen Institute is open! However, Highway 1 to the south is closed — please review the alternate route directions.

Peter Selwyn

Peter Selwyn, M.D., M.P.H. is Chairman of the Department of Family and Social Medicine and Director of the Palliative Care Program at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York. He has been a physician and caregiver for people living with HIV/AIDS for over 30 years, as well as providing end-of-life care for patients and families. He facilitates workshops in grief, loss, and healing for caregivers.  He had the privilege to meet and spend time with Gabrielle Roth in 2012, and learned to appreciate the power and beauty of movement in the process of healing through loss. He has become increasingly involved in 5Rhythms® practice, completing training as a 5Rhythms teacher in 2022, and offering 5Rhythms classes  to health care workers in the Bronx. He is the author of Surviving the Fall: The Personal Journey of an AIDS Doctor.

Peter Selwyn

Peter Selwyn, M.D., M.P.H. is Chairman of the Department of Family and Social Medicine and Director of the Palliative Care Program at Montefiore Medical Center and Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx, New York.
