Visitors are now able to access Esalen as well as other businesses and trails in northern Big Sur via twice-daily convoys on Highway 1 operated by Caltrans.
Convoys run only at 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day. These are the only opportunities to travel into and out of Big Sur, so visitors must plan accordingly.

Karisha Longaker and Sorah Nutting have been creating music and leading communities in song as the inspirational duo MaMuse for nearly two decades. Traveling from coast to coast, they open hearts and invoke presence through their uplifting harmonies and evocative lyrics, meeting audiences in concert halls, festivals, retreat centers, and living rooms alike. Their music — rooted in authenticity, tenderness, and joy — has taken on a life of its own; songs like “We Shall Be Known” and “Hallelujah” have moved far beyond the stage, weaving themselves into birthing rooms, bedside vigils, campfires, and ceremonies of life and death, where people gather to rejoice, grieve, remember, and restore.
In addition to performing, Karisha and Sorah are dedicated facilitators of creative expression. Their work extends into songwriting workshops, community song circles, one-on-one vocal mentorship, and creativity-as-ritual practices that support participants in uncovering their true voice and artistic essence.
Their artistry and teaching have been shaped by the guidance of beloved mentors Melanie DeMore, Maggie Wheeler, and Laurence Cole, as well as the influence of renowned performers Stevie Wonder, Joni Mitchell, Gillian Welch, Frazey Ford, and James Taylor. They also draw deeply from the practices of Julia Cameron, Olivia Corson, Chloë Goodchild, and Gabrielle Roth, whose work continues to inspire their creative evolution.
MaMuse founders Karisha Longaker and Sorah Nutting have spent nearly two decades leading communities in song. With a blend of experience, playful curiosity, and compassionate attunement, Karisha and Sorah cultivate spaces where people feel safe to sing, connect, and awaken their creative spark.
