Visitors are now able to access Esalen as well as other businesses and trails in northern Big Sur via twice-daily convoys on Highway 1 operated by Caltrans.
Convoys run only at 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day. These are the only opportunities to travel into and out of Big Sur, so visitors must plan accordingly.

Benoit Denizet-Lewis is a New York Times bestselling author, a professor at Emerson College, and a longtime writer for The New York Times Magazine, where he has contributed psychologically rich cover stories and features about mental health — including anxiety, addiction recovery, and psychodrama — as well as LGBT life, politics, and identity change.
His most recent book, You’ve Changed: The Promise and Price of Self-Transformation, explores how and why we change in an uncertain world, weaving together reporting and candid accounts of his own struggles and experiences with changing — both chosen and unexpected. Elizabeth Gilbert called You’ve Changed “blazingly smart, funny, thoughtful, and moving,” and NPR selected it for its 2026 midyear best-books list.
Benoit’s first book, America Anonymous: Eight Addicts in Search of a Life, followed eight Americans in various stages of recovery from a wide range of addictions. It was a New York Times Editors’ Choice selection and was featured on the Today show.
Benoit was born and raised in San Francisco and now divides his time between Boston and Prague. His father, Dennis Lewis, taught breathwork at Esalen in the early 2000s.
