Esalen opens May 3, 2024

Visitors are now able to access Esalen as well as other businesses and trails in northern Big Sur via twice-daily convoys on Highway 1 operated by Caltrans.

Convoys run only at 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day. These are the only opportunities to travel into and out of Big Sur, so visitors must plan accordingly.

Amy Secada

One of the leading holistic dance educators in the world, Secada has presented workshops and performances in over 20 countries. A daughter of the Monacan Indian Nation, Secada translates dance into a portal for transformation and connection with our mother earth. Her passion for bridging free form and ancestral movement creates a palette for liberation and discovery. Her teaching methodology explores the physical, mental, spiritual and energetic elements of the intrinsic dance experience through the foundational principals of African Dance, Capoeira, Contemporary and Yogic Philosophy. 

Secada is a graduate of the School Of American Ballet in NYC and holds an advanced level “Graduada” Blue/Green Cord from Guatambu Capoeira. She has graced the stage with artists such as Madonna, Wyclef, Fergie, choreographed for America's Best Dance Crew and been a featured artist for NIKE Women. 

Over the past 30 years Secada has studied various ancestral movement technologies, studying abroad in Senegal, Congo, Angola, India, finally settling in Brazil in 2011 to devote herself to her martial arts and develop her Afro Indigenous based somatic movement practice. Her movement vocabulary weaves elements of Congolese, Sabar, Djembe, Afro-Haitian, Afro-Cuban and numerous African street styles such as N’dombolo, Kuduro and Coupé Décalé. She has studied Capoeira Angola and Regional since 2003 under the guidance of João Grande in NYC, Mestre Gordinho and Professor Cascavel of Abada Capoeira in Brazil. Secada is also a RYT 500 Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga instructor and student of Sheshadri in Mysore, India since 2009.
