Visitors are now able to access Esalen as well as other businesses and trails in northern Big Sur via twice-daily convoys on Highway 1 operated by Caltrans.
Convoys run only at 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day. These are the only opportunities to travel into and out of Big Sur, so visitors must plan accordingly.

Adam Haar Horowitz, PhD, is a neuroscientist, artist, and inventor pioneering the field of Dream Engineering: the use of neuroscience and technology to understand and guide the sleeping mind. He completed his PhD and postdoctoral research at the MIT Media Lab Fluid Interfaces Lab and Harvard Medical School, where he co-invented Dormio and Targeted Dream Incubation (TDI), systems that track sleep and deliver precisely timed cues to influence dreams. His research has shown that dreams can be shaped to enhance creativity, emotional processing, and psychological well-being.
Adam has translated sleep science into clinical and policy impact, developing interventions to reduce nightmares in trauma-exposed populations, and contributing neuroscience evidence in federal court to help reshape legal understanding of solitary confinement and its psychological harms. Alongside his scientific work, he creates sculptural installations exhibited internationally at institutions including Fondation Beyeler, LUMA Arles, and Ars Electronica, where participants sleep overnight inside interactive environments that measure and influence dreaming. His work has been featured in Science, NPR, Harper’s, and the World Economic Forum. He is co-founder of DUST Dream Sciences, translating dream research into tools for healing and human transformation.
Adam Haar Horowitz is an artist, technologist, and neuroscientist with a PhD from MIT. A pioneer of the Dream Engineering field, he builds evidence-based tools that ease nightmares, deepen dreaming, and invite sleep in as a profound teacher of healing, creativity, and human change.
