Esalen is open!

Starting Friday May 17 at 6:30 a.m., Highway 1 north of Esalen will reopen with the use of a 24/7 signalized traffic control, providing unrestricted public access with one-way alternating traffic in both the north and southbound directions.

Until May 17, visitors can access Esalen and other northern Big Sur locations via twice-daily convoys operated by Caltrans only at 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.

Due to road closures along Highway 1 to our north and south, Esalen is closed through April 11.
Esalen Institute is open! However, Highway 1 to the south is closed — please review the alternate route directions.

Esalen opens May 3, 2024

Visitors are now able to access Esalen as well as other businesses and trails in northern Big Sur via twice-daily convoys on Highway 1 operated by Caltrans.

Convoys run only at 7:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m. each day. These are the only opportunities to travel into and out of Big Sur, so visitors must plan accordingly.

Vince Draddy

Vince has been teaching the Diamond Approach for the past 22 years and has been a student for 34 years. He leads ongoing Diamond Approach groups in California, The Netherlands and Ireland as well as working with individuals. He is married with two children.

He spent two years in Asia engaging in extended meditation and chi kung practice and exploring various eastern mystical traditions. It was in Asia that he discovered a book by A.H. Almaas, founder of the Diamond Approach and prompted his return the US to join a group. Having competed in two Olympic Trials as a professional runner and engaged with a Five Animal Form of Chi Kung for the past 35 years he brings a unique perspective on the importance of the body in spiritual exploration. This includes an emphasis on how we relate to the body in meditation and spiritual inquiry. He places a priority in all spiritual practice on the necessity of love, compassion and acceptance for the usual self that is the core of our suffering.
