Cultivating Spiritual Growth to Yield Joy

The cultivation of spiritual growth and awareness is a process that, in time, can yield joy and bring fulfillment beyond measure. Looking ahead to spring of 2023, new workshops in March give access to the tools that can help you live your most authentic life, find the answers within, and align with your truest self.

New On-Campus Workshops: March 2023

Nourish, March 3–5, 2023 with Janet Stone
This nourishing, revitalizing weekend is designed to replenish our nervous systems and adrenals, boost our immune systems, and ground our hearts and minds in simplicity. We will drop down through body-mind-spirit to find the space between effort and surrender and allow our internal systems to release toxins and, through our physical practices, integrate the powerful wellness generated by our bodies.

Cultivating Emotional Awareness and Balance, March 3–6, 2023 with Eve Ekman and Teague O'Malley
Discover the foundational science and practice of emotional awareness. Drawing from the evidence-based Cultivating Emotional Balance training, we will journey on a path of transformation that integrates the wisdom traditions of modern psychology, emotion research, and ancient contemplative practices. Interactive experiences of contemplative art will be woven in to encourage an embodied emotional awareness and heart opening.

Moving into Stillness, March 6–10, 2023 with Janet Stone
Supported by the power of the land, the healing waters, and the strength of community, this will be a week of slowing, deepening, and going within. Through the practice of nourishing yoga movements, restorative postures, meditation, mantras, writing, and intentional silence, we’ll have the opportunity to untether from old behaviors and belief structures and move toward a listening, supple, healing body.

Authentic Alignment, March 10–12, 2023 with Anne van de Water
Get clear about your purpose, values, message, and vision so you can live in alignment with what matters most to you. Through practical wellness practices — including journaling, guided meditation, and Emotional Freedom Technique (Tapping) to help rewire your beliefs, thoughts, feelings, words, and actions to align with your true self — you'll receive support as you begin to create the authentic life of meaning that you envision.

Awakening Joy: Finding Well-Being in Difficult Times, March 10–12, 2023 with James Baraz and Jane Baraz
True happiness is not about acquiring anything. Instead, it comes from opening to the natural joy and aliveness right inside. More than ever, it is vital to understand the importance of joy in these difficult times. We need to remember how to stay connected to that place inside that makes life worth living. Our cultivation of well-being and joy can become our gift to a troubled world.

Cultivating Grace, March 10–13, 2023 with Miranda Macpherson
Discover the Grace that you are inherently within and part of, that connects you meaningfully to real love, clarity, peace, and joy. Open to the spiritual nourishment you need to deepen on your spiritual path. Illuminate the obstacles that bump you back into patterns of fear of control. Discover how to let your suffering be transformed into wisdom and embody your noble qualities deeper into daily life through the practice of ego relaxation.

Healing Waters: Rites of Passage & the Embodied Masculine, March 13–17, 2023 with Tom Little Bear Nason and Douglas Drummond
There are not enough opportunities for men to work together to bridge manhood, warriorhood, and the early, pre-technological and pre-industrial ways of man. Our intention for this week is to create a powerful space for men to come together and reignite our sacred fire. Using the tools of traditional rites of passage integrated with the fundamentals of the 5Rhythms® movement practice, we’ll ground our emotional presence, create a space of non-judgment and supportive witnessing, and come together to encourage healing of our minds, bodies, and spirits.

Come Alive: Meditation for People Who Can’t Stop Thinking, March 13–17, 2023 with Justin Michael Williams
Learn the truth behind meditation and why it’s difficult for so many people. Build a practice that doesn’t just help you relax — but makes you feel more alive. With daily meditation practice, intentional ritual-building, TED Talk-style lessons, live music, morning movement, and a dance party, this class will rejuvenate your spirit and bring you back home to yourself.

One Ground, Two Paths, and Two Results: A Meditation, Yoga, and Shadow Work Retreat, March 17–20, 2023 with Chandra Easton
At the heart of contemplative life is the archetypal journey home to the ground of our essential being that is love. Meditation brings us to this experience, our true ground, and enables us to gain confidence and maturity in it. In this retreat, we will explore the Buddhist teachings on “one ground, two paths, two results.” We will meditate indoors and out, practice gentle yoga, and learn how to work with challenges along the path. All are welcome.

Grief Dancer, March 17–20, 2023 with Lucia Horan and Peter Selwyn
Using the tools of the 5Rhythms® movement practice combined with a process of grief work grounded in emotional presence, non-judgment, and supportive witnessing, participants will come together in a safe space to help heal mind, body, and spirit.

Learning Tarot: Awakening The Magic of Your Own Inner Guidance, March 20–24, 2023 with Brenda Rose
The 78 cards of a tarot deck can overwhelm even the most dedicated students; that’s why this tarot class is based on the sacred stories of tarot. Everyone remembers stories. Once you know the stories of each card and how its lessons and blessings flow into the next card’s story, you’re able to read tarot cards in a way that connects with the human spirit.

Stories That Make Us Whole: The Power of Writing in Sacred Community, March 20–24, 2023 with Laura Davis
In a polarized, uncertain world, gathering in community, living in our bodies, and expressing the truth is more important than ever. In this transformative five-day writing workshop with seven-time author Laura Davis, we’ll use ritual and deep writing to discover the healing power of language, connect with our inner voice, craft tales rooted in the physical immediacy of the moment, and birth powerful, true stories onto the page.

Begin Again: Expanding Into The Spring Equinox, A Yoga, Meditation, & Restorative Retreat, March 24–27, 2023 with Jillian Pransky and guest musician Garth Stevenson
When we pause to nurture ourselves, we can better nurture our world. The spring equinox is a perfect time to remove heaviness and invite in fresh energy, preparing you to fully bloom into the season — and into life. With an emphasis on grounding and opening to change, discover practices to help you thrive during times of paradox, ambiguity, and contradiction to embrace hope, love, beauty, and joy, while live music expands you with deeply healing vibrations.

Relational Gestalt and Body Centered Awareness, March 27–31, 2023 with Dorothy Charles and Patrice Hamilton
When we increase our awareness of our somatic sense of self, we can create new options for developing more effective psychological and physical patterns. Through Relational Gestalt awareness practices, Body Centered Awareness movement, a mixture of didactic and experiential exercises, as well as individual "open seat" sessions with Dorothy and with the support of the group, you can begin to move beyond habits of being and relating that no longer serve you.

Nourishing the Whole Writer, March 27–31, 2023 with Janis Cooke Newman and Saeeda Hafiz
Taught by published author and long-time meditator Janis Cooke Newman alongside certified yoga teacher and wellness expert Saeeda Hafiz, this workshop is designed to nourish and inspire the whole writer. Using a combination of mindfulness exercises and yoga, free writing, and self-care techniques, we’ll explore all the ways we can nurture and feed our own creativity.

Uncover Your Story with Writing, Yoga, and Mindfulness, March 31–April 3, 2023 with Cara Chandler and Darnell Lamont Walker
Inside you, maybe buried deep or maybe just below the surface, there is a story you want to tell. This is the workshop that will help you tell it. Through mindfulness practices, writing, and yoga movement, you will connect to that deeper authentic story and that deeper authentic you. No matter where you are on your journey — beginner or expert — there is space for you here.

If Your Body Could Speak, March 31 – April 3, 2023 with Daria Halprin
The body is a living narrative, an interconnected web of our physical, emotional, and intellectual experiences. When we don’t take time or know how to be creative listeners, the body will tell its stories in disabling ways. This workshop will be a creative exploration on listening to the body and to the heart of what matters in your life through movement and art making. By encountering our bodies creatively, we can discover artful ways to re-story ourselves, bringing new visions to the life themes that matter to us.

“Remembering to be as self compassionate as I can and praying to the divine that we're all a part of.”
–Aaron

“Prayer, reading, meditation, walking.”
–Karen
“Erratically — which is an ongoing stream of practice to find peace.”
–Charles
“Try on a daily basis to be kind to myself and to realize that making mistakes is a part of the human condition. Learning from our mistakes is a journey. But it starts with compassion and caring. First for oneself.”
–Steve

“Physically: aerobic exercise, volleyball, ice hockey, cycling, sailing. Emotionally: unfortunately I have to work to ‘not care’ about people or situations which may end painfully. Along the lines of ‘attachment is the source of suffering’, so best to avoid it or limit its scope. Sad though because it could also be the source of great joy. Is it worth the risk?“
–Rainer

“It's time for my heart to be nurtured on one level yet contained on another. To go easy on me and to allow my feelings to be validated, not judged harshly. On the other hand, to let the heart rule with equanimity and not lead the mind and body around like a master.”
–Suzanne

“I spend time thinking of everything I am grateful for, and I try to develop my ability to express compassion for myself and others without reservation. I take time to do the things I need to do to keep myself healthy and happy. This includes taking experiential workshops, fostering relationships, and participating within groups which have a similar interest to become a more compassionate and fulfilled being.“
–Peter

“Self-forgiveness for my own judgments. And oh yeah, coming to Esalen.”
–David B.

“Hmm, this is a tough one! I guess I take care of my heart through fostering relationships with people I feel connected to. Spending quality time with them (whether we're on the phone, through messages/letters, on Zoom, or in-person). Being there for them, listening to them, sharing what's going on with me, my struggles and my successes... like we do in the Esalen weekly Friends of Esalen Zoom sessions!”
–Lori

“I remind myself in many ways of the fact that " Love is all there is!" LOVE is the prize and this one precious life is the stage we get to learn our lessons. I get out into nature, hike, camp, river kayak, fly fish, garden, I create, I dance (not enough!), and I remain grateful for each day, each breath, each moment. Being in the moment, awake, and remembering the gift of life and my feeling of gratitude for all of creation.”
–Steven
“My physical heart by limiting stress and eating a heart-healthy diet. My emotional heart by staying in love with the world and by knowing that all disappointment and loss will pass.“
–David Z.

Today, September 29, is World Heart Day. Strike up a conversation with your own heart and as you feel comfortable, encourage others to do the same. As part of our own transformations and self-care, we sometimes ask for others to illuminate and enliven our hearts or speak our love language.

What if we could do this for ourselves too, even if just for today… or to start a heart practice, forever?
