New On-Campus Workshops: February 2023

How to Be Goo: Navigating and Thriving in the Liminal Space, February 3–5, 2023 with Shelly Tygielski and Emily McDowell
Before a caterpillar becomes a butterfly, it first becomes formless goo. When we go through a major life change, we, too, find ourselves formless, in liminal space. The longer we sit in the darkness, trying to find our way out, wondering why we’re not butterflies yet, the more frustrated and anxious we feel. What if we could learn to not only survive this space, but find rest there? Or creativity, curiosity, and even joy?

Exploring and Restoring Our Path to Healing: An Homage to Black History Month, February 3–5, 2023 with LaVerne McLeod
This is a weekend to celebrate Black History Month and explore paths to freedom by learning to manage our triggers. We shall unlock our heart center with empathy exercises, interactive drama, visualization, song, and movement. Together, we can build bridges toward freedom as we meet what was once fearful and oppressive with harmony.

The Great Seal: Introduction to Mahamudra Meditation, February 5–10, 2023 with Dustin DiPerna
This retreat presents a full set of instructions for Mahamudra meditation. You’ll learn a detailed map of the four yogas of Mahamudra: One-Pointedness, Non-Elaboration, One-Taste, and Non-Meditation. Beginning with the stages of tranquility practice and culminating in extraordinary insight practices, students will be given the tools needed to recognize the true nature of awareness as vast, non-dual, and unconditionally loving. Each session builds on the previous one. Attendance at every session is required.

Compassionate Leadership, February 10–12, 2023 with Shauna Shapiro
Great leaders encourage collaboration, promote inclusion, and make others feel seen and heard. Their greatest tool? Compassion. Learn about the surprising science behind compassion, the latest research on neuroplasticity, and the most powerful tools and practices to lead teams that are connected, collaborative, creative, and successful. You will be given a science-based roadmap to re-engineer internal states, manage stress, boost creativity, and cultivate a culture of safety and connection.

Esalen® Massage: The Basics, February 10–12, 2023 with Daniela Urbassek and Char Pias
The ocean waves inspire the pace of Esalen Massage. Its methods include connection with the earth, with your massage partner, and with yourself; an emphasis on presence rather than fixing; and respect for our natural impulse toward healing. Students learn to sense into the body and encourage release of muscular tension. The effects reach deep, often repairing old wounds and renewing our joyful vitality. The workshop provides instruction in basic massage skills.

The Power of Breath: Embodied Liberation, February 13–17, 2023 with Sadia Bruce
When we embody breath — allowing limbs and bones to express outwardly the dynamic, unceasing pulsation of life within — we touch freedom. In this experiential workshop, we’ll explore and deepen our connection to our breathing bodies through a number of somatic pathways: embodied movement, breathwork, presencing exercises, meditation in motion, and sound.

Tantra: The Body and The Release, an Esalen Signature Series | Freedom and Self-Sovereignty, February 17–20, 2023 with Sravana Borkataky-Varma and Keith Edward Cantú
We approach this course as scholar-practitioners, willingly engaging both the intellectual and the practical with our teachings. We recognize the importance of Tantra’s historical roots in a South Asian context while noting that its meanings have expanded over centuries so as to not be confined to any single religion or culture. Our teaching philosophy is founded upon the perspective that Tantra, when appreciated in a holistic way, can provide an avenue for freedom and self-liberation.

Make Peace with your Mind: How Mindfulness and Compassion Can Help Free You from the Inner Critic, February 17–19, 2023 with Mark Coleman
If you wish to be free from the influence of the inner critic, this workshop offers tried and tested methods for overcoming the challenges of self-judgment. In this course, you will learn how to recognize judging thoughts and deal effectively with inner critic attacks. You will cultivate beautiful qualities of self-acceptance, self-compassion, and love as powerful antidotes to the critic, and you will learn the power of forgiveness in response to self-judgment.

Falling in Love with Existence: Rewilding at the Edge of the World, February 20–24, 2023 with Hannah Muse and Gitanjali Hemp
Join us at the edge of the world as we explore the depths of our wild and playful hearts! Immersed in the powerful container of Esalen lands and held by seasoned guides Gitanjali Hemp and Hannah Muse, you’ll be led through an intentionally curated arc of somatic exploration, energy work, yoga, guided visualization, relational play, and embodied ritual to remember your true nature and rediscover your uninhibited joy.

Fundamentals of Reiki: Japanese Roots to Modern Practice, February 24–27, 2023 with Diane Domondon and Justin Stein, PhD
This extended weekend course offers students a chance to learn the fundamentals of Reiki from both historical and experiential perspectives. During this class, we will discuss Reiki’s origins in Japan, how it was influenced by other practices, and how it evolved over time. You will be exposed to forms of meditation designed to strengthen one’s ability to connect to Reiki’s universal source and to increase the flow of Reiki through one’s body.

Psychedelic Medicines and the Nature of Mind and Consciousness, February 24–26, 2023 with David Presti and Kristi Panik
Psychedelics produce powerful effects on the mind, probing connections between physiology and consciousness and between mind and world. After decades of quiescence, interest in psychedelics has returned to mainstream science, accompanied by much enthusiasm and media attention. In the context of this rush to pull these powerful medicines into the framework of biomedical science and commercial healthcare, we will pause to take an expansive look at what these plant and fungal teachers reveal about the nature of mind and reality.

Gestalt Practice and Principles: Cultivating Embodied Wholeness in Daily Life, February 26 – March 3, 2023 with Steven Harper
At its core, Gestalt Practice is an awareness practice in which we cultivate embodied, present-moment awareness of the unfolding experience of the here and now on a journey toward authentic growth, wholeness, and aliveness. We will explore the rich practices and principles of Gestalt Practice, apply them to everyday life, and begin to experience the simple yet profound potential for showing up more fully and authentically for the daily presentations of living an awake life.

Portals and Pathways: Ecstatic Experience, Music, and the Jungian Red Book, February 27 – March 3, 2023 with John W. Price Ph.D., LPC and Rodney Waters
As a unique mediator of opposites, music unfolds out of the interdependent relationship of consonance and dissonance. This workshop will explore music from neurobiological, spiritual, and experiential perspectives. Bringing decades of experience as Jungians, psychotherapists, and professional musicians, John and Rodney will set the intellectual, theoretical, and psychotherapeutic stage for an exploration of those portals and pathways within. This week will focus on practices for deep listening and culminate in a concert inspired by Jung’s Red Book.

“Remembering to be as self compassionate as I can and praying to the divine that we're all a part of.”
–Aaron

“Prayer, reading, meditation, walking.”
–Karen
“Erratically — which is an ongoing stream of practice to find peace.”
–Charles
“Try on a daily basis to be kind to myself and to realize that making mistakes is a part of the human condition. Learning from our mistakes is a journey. But it starts with compassion and caring. First for oneself.”
–Steve

“Physically: aerobic exercise, volleyball, ice hockey, cycling, sailing. Emotionally: unfortunately I have to work to ‘not care’ about people or situations which may end painfully. Along the lines of ‘attachment is the source of suffering’, so best to avoid it or limit its scope. Sad though because it could also be the source of great joy. Is it worth the risk?“
–Rainer

“It's time for my heart to be nurtured on one level yet contained on another. To go easy on me and to allow my feelings to be validated, not judged harshly. On the other hand, to let the heart rule with equanimity and not lead the mind and body around like a master.”
–Suzanne

“I spend time thinking of everything I am grateful for, and I try to develop my ability to express compassion for myself and others without reservation. I take time to do the things I need to do to keep myself healthy and happy. This includes taking experiential workshops, fostering relationships, and participating within groups which have a similar interest to become a more compassionate and fulfilled being.“
–Peter

“Self-forgiveness for my own judgments. And oh yeah, coming to Esalen.”
–David B.

“Hmm, this is a tough one! I guess I take care of my heart through fostering relationships with people I feel connected to. Spending quality time with them (whether we're on the phone, through messages/letters, on Zoom, or in-person). Being there for them, listening to them, sharing what's going on with me, my struggles and my successes... like we do in the Esalen weekly Friends of Esalen Zoom sessions!”
–Lori

“I remind myself in many ways of the fact that " Love is all there is!" LOVE is the prize and this one precious life is the stage we get to learn our lessons. I get out into nature, hike, camp, river kayak, fly fish, garden, I create, I dance (not enough!), and I remain grateful for each day, each breath, each moment. Being in the moment, awake, and remembering the gift of life and my feeling of gratitude for all of creation.”
–Steven
“My physical heart by limiting stress and eating a heart-healthy diet. My emotional heart by staying in love with the world and by knowing that all disappointment and loss will pass.“
–David Z.

Today, September 29, is World Heart Day. Strike up a conversation with your own heart and as you feel comfortable, encourage others to do the same. As part of our own transformations and self-care, we sometimes ask for others to illuminate and enliven our hearts or speak our love language.

What if we could do this for ourselves too, even if just for today… or to start a heart practice, forever?
