In American mythology, baked goods often represent safety, kindness, and the warmth of familial love. At Esalen, the bread bar, breakfast biscuits, and baked desserts are definitely part of creating a unique ambiance. But baking is no longer an art passed down from mother to children. A superlative pie is probably not on offer at the nearest roadside diner, biscuits pop out of a cardboard canister, and many home cooks are intimidated by the thought of baking bread. In this workshop, we will bake and enjoy exceptionally good pie together, feed and develop a sourdough culture for use in Esalen’s classic sourdough rye bread, and bake some simple and versatile biscuit and quick-bread recipes. This mother's day weekend workshop is designed to introduce Esalen-style baking into your kitchen repertoire and to send you back out into the world feeling nourished and empowered. Everyone, including daughters and sons 14 years and older, is welcome.
