“Joy is our birthright,” says Andrea Juhan. “We are designed to experience pleasure. But have you ever noticed how easy it is to drift to the one negative comment in a sea of positive responses? Our brains have what neuropsychologists call a negativity bias. For this reason, it is very important that we practice embodying the full spectrum of human joy. We must teach ourselves happiness again and again to counterbalance evolution’s survival directive. Dancing is the perfect medium for this, and our dancing companions are the perfect motivation for developing the capacity to tolerate ‘big hits’ of rapture or ecstasy, and noticing the quieter forms of joy. The physicality of joy can imprint our deepest being. In Open Floor Movement Practice, we investigate the emotion of embodied joy through a continuum from primary simple delight to complex expressions of happiness to transcendent joy. We can strengthen these neural pathways—we can dance ourselves into being happier more easygoing people—at least more of the time.”
