For peace, one must remember: As a bird cannot fly with one wing, as a man cannot applaud with one hand, so a country cannot make peace just with one side, with itself. For peace, we need the two of us. -Shimon Peres
In troubled times for the world, oppositions between nations and peoples can be transcended by individuals willing to persevere in the effort to make human connections. They inspire us to cross between cultures to achieve a common good. We have chosen fourteen feature films (including some documentaries) that invite us to learn from the lives of courageous peacemakers. The individuals who have taken up this struggle in a healing spirit range from Nobel Peace Prize awardees such as Nelson Mandela; Martin Luther King, Jr.; the Dalai Lama; Mother Teresa; Aung San Sui Kyi; and Yitzhak Rabin, to spiritual masters, musicians, and artists, among others.
The seminar includes films carefully curated and shown on state-of-the-art equipment (including 4K Blu-ray video projection and nine loudspeakers), handout syllabus on the films, and reflection and group interaction focused on the participant’s own experience of each film. Movies take on an exquisite cumulative power when shown over seven days at Esalen in a group setting that is truly remarkable and unforgettable.
