Sunny Maxwell
has been teaching and learning in Esalen’s kitchen since 2009, and has baked professionally for more than a decade. She learned baking from her mother and from her grandmother, who made pies that prompted at least two offers of marriage.

In American mythology, baked goods often represent safety, kindness, and the warmth of familial love. At Esalen, the bread bar, breakfast biscuits, and baked desserts are definitely part of creating a unique ambiance.  But baking is no longer an art passed down from mother to children. A superlative pie is probably not on offer at the nearest roadside diner, biscuits pop out of a cardboard canister, and many home cooks are intimidated by the thought of baking bread.
