The kitchen is run by a dynamic, collaborative team of seekers who work closely with Esalen’s farmers to create a living example of sustainability. At any given time, about 35 people work together in Esalen’s kitchen. One third are permanent staff, one third are year-long extended students, and one third are workscholars at Esalen for one or two months.
As part of Esalen’s commitment to self- and social transformation, the kitchen staff practices clear, compassionate communication and supports one another as each person evolves on his or her own journey. The cycle of meal preparation and cleanup never ends; there are continuous opportunities to improve teamwork and communication.
