Gazebo Park School is a one-acre outdoor wonderland where children up to first grade engage their bodies and minds and have a fantastic time in the process. It is open to children of Esalen workshop participants, leaders, guests, staff and local Big Sur residents.
We have an eco-consious/sustainable model of land stewardship, and are completely off the grid. We have implemented cob structures such as the cob zebo, the lizard bench, a rain harvester roof and compostable outdoor toilets and graywater drainage.
The park includes gardens, meadows, and orchards, with reading nooks, art spaces, a children’s theater, and climbing structures throughout. Gazebo is also a migration site for thousands of monarch butterflies each year. During wet weather children learn and play in our farmhouse classroom and first aid safety bus across from the park.
Gazebo teachers are passionate participants and guides, as children make choices and learn during a wide variety of activities, experiments, and self-directed exploration. Activities include planting, harvesting, eating, and composting fruits and vegetables, exploring nature, caring for animals, art projects, cooking, stories, and dramatic play.
Gazebo is open from 9 am to 4:30 pm, Monday through Friday.
