Food & Recipes

We balance our desire to engage and educate people with our goal to grow as much food as possible to feed and nourish those who are in the midst of powerful and transformative processes at Esalen.

—shirley ward, Esalen Farm and Garden Manager

The food at Esalen reflects a deep bond with the land, a commitment to sustainable practices, and a daily collaboration between the kitchen and the farm and garden staff.

Year round, Esalen farmers harvest produce and herbs every morning to support the kitchen in preparing the most alive and rejuvenating food possible. The farm specializes in gourmet salad mixes, specialty herbs used for seasoning and teas, heirloom root crops, and a diverse variety of kale and lettuces.

Esalen uses about 3,200 eggs per week, which are sourced from Glaum Egg Ranch, an organic and cage-free family farm located 80 miles north of Esalen.

All of the fish is line-caught in Monterey Bay by a family-run business.

We offer hormone-free dairy products, all-natural and organic meats, and dairy-free, vegetarian, vegan, and wheat-free options at every meal.

We are happy to work with individual guests to accommodate specific dietary needs.

Breakfast is served in the Lodge daily from 8:30am to 9:45am and includes:

  • Organic hot cereals
  • Local, cage-free eggs
  • House-made granola and yogurt
  • Local, organic fruit
  • House-baked bread and organic preserves
  • Garden-grown greens

Lunch and Dinner are served in the Lodge daily. Lunch is 12:30pm to 1:45pm; dinner is 6:00pm to 7:00pm.

Growing Food: Our Approach

The Esalen farm and garden exists in a landscape of constant transition and transformation. In any given year we utilize many traditions and modes of farming: organic, biodynamic, permacultural, and bio-intensive. The farm is a true reflection of Esalen as a whole:  we wear our dogmas lightly, we go with the flow, we experiment, and we constantly evolve our practices.
