Internship in the Gazebo Early Education Program

Esalen Institute's Gazebo Park School is a licensed infant-toddler center and preschool that has been in operation over 30 years. We serve primarily the Big Sur community, as well as the children of Esalen's staff and guests.

We are an outdoor school with ecology and expressive arts based curriculum. We use developmentally appropriate child development practices to teach environmental ethics, and to support social, emotional and cognitive development. We value time for exploring, investigating, observing and playing. We are currently exploring permaculture, expanding our community exchanges and sharing our sustainability education model.

The Internship at Gazebo is a three-month commitment with a fee of $450 for each month. With the internship fees you receive room, board, two sessions with an Esalen Student Advisor and access to movement classes and residential education programs.

California State law mandates that all adults participating in a program with children have a clear criminal record background check and have had a negative TB test within the last 12 months. Another prerequisite for applying for this position is that you have had experience in early childhood education or sustainability education. Applicants may also meet selection criteria if they have done at least two work-scholar months, preferably three.

Interns must be ready to be fully present and committed to the children and the Program. As an Intern, most of the housing will be shared housing in the "farmhouse," which is an older structure with an incredible ocean view. The farmhouse is also the schoolhouse when it is raining or when we have evening meetings. While there is the advantage of a real home atmosphere, (kitchen, phone, TV, fireplace etc.), there is also the responsibility of maintaining a safe and appropriate space for children in accordance with state licensing regulations.

Another important piece of information to know is that we live and work with many animals, (1 pig, 2 goats, 3 chickens, 1 rooster and 2 cats), and you will be expected to help in the care of them. You will receive guidance and training.

The Internship at Gazebo is a program of experiential inquiry and study, within and without. As an Intern, you will be asked to keep a journal throughout your time here and complete some written assignments. The first month is focused on observation, and you will be recording written observations of what goes on in the Park. In the second month you will be asked to look at how you are affected by what you experience with the children and how you may bring what you are learning into the rest of your life. Lastly, in the third month you will be asked to prepare a final project.

It's hard work, challenging, fun and very rewarding. I look forward to working, learning and laughing with you!
