As Esalen entered the 70s it was in the middle of a dramatic phase of expansion during which there was a rapid growth in the volume and variety of programming. Many more creative arts workshops were held than ever before.

1970s
Charles Lloyd, saxophonist and leader of one of the most popular jazz bands of all time, moved to Big Sur in the 70s and performed at Esalen with musical collaborator Michel Petrucciani. He most recently played at Esalen during the Institute's 30th anniversary celebration.
Chungliang Al Huang was responsible for introducing tai chi to a wide audience and popularizing it at Esalen as well as throughout America. Beginning in the early 70s he presented workshops and performances with musicians Paul Horn, Susan Osborne and Paul Winter and continues to teach at the Institute today.
David Shire, Academy-Award-Winning soundtrack composer, has performed at Esalen and participated in workshops since the 70s.
Jimmy Messina, musician from the band Buffalo Springfield, came to Esalen many times and performed at the anniversary celebration in 92.
Peter Matthiessen, author of The Snow Leopard, was an early workshop leader at Esalen and taught creative writing in the 70s and 80s.
